Infantile paralysis cases showed a sharp increase in some states last week, the Associated Press reports. Kansas has had 184 cases this year compared to 51 last year up to Aug. 1 Polio deaths in Kansas this year numbered 10, the State Board of Health said. There were five deaths last year in the same period.

A new hangar, capable of housing five airplanes will be erected at the Iola Municipal Airport this fall. The city commission yesterday authorized the purchase of the hangar which will be shipped here in sections and erected at the site. It will cost $3,650. The Kansas National Guard plans to keep two planes at Iola in the hangar. The other three stalls will be leased by the city to owners.

The Allen County jail is not fit for human occupation according to James F. Aiken, sanitary engineer for the Kansas State Board of Health. County commission chairman Alvin Ericson pointed out that the county is accumulating a fund to build a new courthouse and that a new jail would be included in it.

HUMBOLDT A new grocery and meat market to be known as the Jack Horner Store was opened this morning by owners Stanley Lusk and E. W. Hatch. It is located on the east side of the square on 9th Street. This is the first of a series of chain stores that Lust plans to build in small towns in southeast Kansas. Hatch, who will operate the meat department, spent 20 years with Self Service, here, selling his interest in April to Charles Virth.

Ronnie Johnson, seven-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Johnson, Savonburg, is in serious condition at the Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, according to a report received by the county chapter of the Infantile Paralysis Foundation. It is reported that both his legs and his right arm are paralyzed. Ronnie is Allen Countys 10th known polio victim since the first case was reported early in July.

Mrs. J.D. Conderman is champion of Iola womens golf for 1949, having defeated Lois Lacy 4 and 3 in the final match of the championship flight in a city tournament. Mrs. H.M. Stephenson is champion in Flight A, winner over Mrs. Angelo Scott, 6 and 5.
