As heavy wet snow continues, county agent Tom Maxwell said tomorrow is considered to be the last possible day to plant oats. Maxwell knows of no one who has been able to plant oats during the past 30 days and predicted a zero crop for the county this year.

John M. Bills has opened an office at 106 N. Jefferson, in the building formerly occupied by the Echo Cafe, and will operate exclusively as an architect from now on. Bills came to Iola three years ago as a partner of Tom Heller under the firm name of Better Homes Construction Co. Together they have designed and built new homes in Iola. The partnership has been dissolved. Heller will continue to build and Bills will practice his profession as an architect independently.

Vincent Smith, eighth-grader in Iola Junior High School, won his fourth county spelling championship on March 26. Sixteen schools competed, the largest number since the event was revived several years ago. Vincent will represent Allen County in the state spelling bee at Topeka, April 23.

The operating mechanism of the old Iola courthouse tower clock was packed into a truck today and started on its way to Cincinnati, Ohio. There it will be reconstructed and electrified by the I. T. Verdin Company, “Bell Ringers of America.” When the clock is returned, it will show the time of day only to those who take a special look at it on the south side of the square, but the bong of its great cast iron bell will be heard throughout the townsite as it tolls the hours.
