On Dec. 1 the Allen County Airport became a division of the countys department of public works. Department director Bill King agrees that it should be made more attractive to those who use it.

The Allen County Chapter of the Friends of the Prairie Spirit Rail Trail got an early Christmas present Saturday. Prior to the groups first annual Bicycle Tour of Lights, Dale Crawford and Margrette Blackburne of the Johnson County Bike Club paid a visit and donated $1,000 to the Friends group. The money will be devoted to developing the third and final phase of the Trail, bringing it from Welda to Iola.

Eva Howard, owner of Classics and More, has been ordained as a minister with the First Christian Church. She received her bachelors degree in religion from Baker University in 1989 and earned a masters degree from St. Pauls School of Theology in Kansas City, Mo. in 1996. She opened Classics and More earlier this year.

Two former Iolans have distinguished themselves in educational fields. Matt McIntosh, a 1986 graduate of Iola High School and the son of Gary And Barbara McIntosh of Iola, was awarded a doctorate of philosophy in statistics by the University of Missouri Dec. 16. Gary Rice, a 1970 graduate of IHS, also won his Ph.D. and was also given the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching at Southwest Texas State University. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Rice, who live north of Piqua.
