Five Allen County farmers will be honored for their conservation work at the annual meeting of the Soil Conservation District tomorrow evening. They are Harold Whitaker, Myrle Mann, Buford Larson, Elvin Butts and William Klotzbach.

U.S. Air Force Major Jose P. Marquez, son of Mr. and Mrs. I. E. Marquez, Humboldt, has been decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross at Bergstrom AFB, Texas. Major Marquez distinguished himself by extraordinary achievement as a U-10 pilot in Ba Xuyten, Vietnam. His actions were directly responsible for the surrender of 22 members of the enemy forces.

Robert C. Walton, 79, president of Walton Foundry of Iola, died this morning at his home. He had not been ill. Mr. Walton was active in the management of the foundry from the time he purchased the Kirk-Morrow Iron Works of Iola in 1938 until his death.

While many counties in Kansas, including several adjoining Allen, have elected to quit paying a bounty for coyote ears, local commissioners have decided to continue the bounty. Leo Smart, commissioner, said $1,000 has been budgeted for the bounties again this year. Two dollars per coyote scalp will be paid out until the $1,000 has been exhausted, Smart said, and only residents of Allen County may collect the reward.

 

22 — The new Allen County Country Club clubhouse is steadily moving toward a completion date of May 1. The new clubhouse will include a dining room, bar-lounge area, pro shop, men’s and women’s locker rooms and a sauna bath. The focal point of the interior of the building will be a stone fireplace.
