Iola dairyman Ivan Strickler spoke Friday at a Dairy Day gathering at the University of Missouri in Columbia. Strickler said only Australia and New Zealand can produce dairy products as efficiently as the U.S. and that the U.S. should become a major exporter.

HUMBOLDT — Roger Baker and Joe Works create custom truck beds in their shop here. The two are planning to move their operation to the former Knights of Columbus Dance Hall near the southwest corner of the city square. The three-year-old business is growing rapidly and has outgrown its location at 915 N. 7th.

The Southeast Kansas Multi-County Health Department is encouraging all parents to have their children immunized against measles, mumps, rubella, pertussis, diphtheria and polio and is offering that service at a minimum cost next Monday. Wanda Davidson, public health nurse supervisor, said fewer than half of the two-year-old children in Kansas are fully protected from these diseases. Children should be immunized before age two to be fully protected, she said.

Donna Salzwedel has been made division manager of Midland Brake. She succeeds Ron Seufert, who took a job with Echlin Corp., Midland’s parent company, in Kansas City. Salzwedel has been an employee at the plant since 1976 and has been materials manager for a year and a half.

A $1,097 million federal grant for improvement of the Allen County Airport has been secured.
