Beth Toland, pictured, conducts a science experiment with her class using the reaction between baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and vinegar (acetic acid) to create carbon dioxide gas. The bubbles from the gas are able to power each student’s individually made boats across a tub of water. A simple experiment, the boats are crafted out of water bottles and straws. Allen Community College will host a summer camp July 6–9, offering hands-on learning experiences in STEM, art, service learning, and outdoor skills for students entering kindergarten through eighth grade.

Campers may enroll in morning or afternoon sessions or participate in both for a full day of activities. Morning sessions will run from 9 a.m. to noon, with afternoon sessions from 1–4 p.m.

Morning sessions will focus on STEM and environmental learning for campers entering kindergarten through third grade. Students will explore topics such as entomology, horticulture, biodiversity, and conservation while learning how to care for their community and environment.

Campers going into fourth grade through eighth grade may take part in advanced art sessions emphasizing creativity, process, and a variety of artistic techniques. Service learning opportunities will also be available for older campers, with projects designed to support healthy environments throughout Allen County.

In the afternoon sessions, campers entering fourth through eighth grade may participate in more STEM learning. Outdoor survival skills sessions will be offered for campers entering kindergarten through third grade, giving students the opportunity to learn basic outdoor recreation skills such as knot tying, tent setup, fire building for cooking, and basic fishing equipment care.

The cost is $40 for one session (morning or afternoon) or $60 for both sessions. Enrollment and fees cover the entire camp.
