Allen Community College sponsored a ping-pong tournament for students Wednesday evening in the college’s student center. Prizes were awarded to the top three finishers. “But they really play for glory more than anything else,” said Allen’s bookstore manager Austin Hendrix, who coordinated the event.
Thirty-two students participated in the college’s eighth tournament for a sport that’s fast becoming a favorite hobby for many. First place went to sophomore Nikki Gear, who graduates from Allen this weekend. Pretty much everybody expected Gear to win — after all, her parents are professional table tennis players in New Zealand. Gear has won three of the four tournaments she’s played in.
Dexter Todd, a sophomore from England, won second, while Joaquin Sandobal of Argentina won third.
