Following a bear sighting reported earlier this week in Chanute, the Allen County Sheriff’s Office said a bear was struck in a single-vehicle accident early Friday morning.

At approximately 4:15 a.m., deputies responded to the crash east of Old U.S. Highway 169, about five miles north of Iola. The driver, Justin Mines, told officers he struck a bear. Mines was wearing his seat belt and was not injured.

The bear was found a short distance from the roadway with severe injuries. With assistance from a game warden from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP), the animal was euthanized.
