FORT SCOTT — Marmaton Valley High School attended the Fort Scott Community College Math Relays on Friday.
Sixteen students competed by taking 15-minute timed tests in geometry, algebra, equations and inequalities, simplifications, mental math, potpourri, word problems and trigonometry.
Each student competed in at least two of the categories.
Truett Blevins took third in ninth-grade algebra, while Tayleigh Forman, Cooper Scharff and Sophia Heim each took home fifth-place finishes in ninth-grade mental math, 11th-grade equations and inequalities and 12th-grade word problems, respectively.
Computing were seniors Brevyn Campbell, Chris Ferguson, Heim, Emily Robertson, Todd Stevenson and Khayrun Subier; juniors Taylen Blevins, Andie Carr, Hunter Doolittle, Mason Ferguson and Scharff; sophomores Brady Burton and Kaden McVey; and freshmen Blevins, Forman and Jay Henry.
“I was very proud of the kids’ efforts and the way they represented Marmaton Valley,” math instructor Kelci Botts said. “Only 11 of the 16 students had ever competed before in a math relay event. It can be very overwhelming for the first time. I expect great things from this group and look forward to our spring competitions.”
