A pinwheel coloring contest was held Thursday, sponsored by Hope Unlimited and CASA of the 31st District. Students from 18 schools in grades K-3 participated.

Pinwheels, a symbol for the child abuse prevention movement, have been selected because they represent a free and lighthearted vision of the world, one where all children grow up happy, healthy and supported.

Judges for the contest included Wilson County District Court Judge David Rogers, Iola Fire Chief Corey Isbell, Iola Police Chief Jared Warner and the Register’s Tim Stauffer.

Together, the team picked three winners each for Iola, Humboldt, Marmaton Valley and Yates Center elementary schools.

Prizes for the students — usually sweet treats or other food items — are donated by area businesses. Winners will be announced in the coming days.
