A bit of serendipity helped local resident Chris Holloway save an Iola mans porch from burning.
Holloway told the Register he was traveling along Lincoln Street Wednesday morning, when he saw an elderly man struggling to control a fire emanating from a small gas grill on his porch.
Holloway doubled back, asked the man, whose name he did not reveal, whether he needed assistance.
He did.
He wasnt moving around very well, Holloway said. Im glad I saw him when I did.
Holloway grabbed a bucket of water and helped smother the flames. Holloway said the man appeared to be making syrup when the fire started.
