Phillip Merkel, who retired as Moran mayor in January, received a special plaque Monday for his service to the community from Jerry Wallis, who was elected in November to succeed Merkel.
Merkel was mayor for 29 years, from 1989 to 1993, and then again from 2001 until this year. He holds the distinction of being the longest-serving mayor in Moran’s history.
