Teachers at Allen County Community College will receive pay raises of 2 percent for the upcoming school year and 2.5 percent for 2012-13, according to terms of a master agreement accepted Thursday by the college’s board of trustees.
The master agreement contains other changes, including the formation of a sick leave pool by full-time faculty members.
The pool is intended for use by participating full-time faculty if they have exhausted their own sick leave and personal days due to a catastrophic illness or injury.
The agreement also puts in place professional leave days for faculty members for their continuing education.
The trustees’ approval was contingent upon the agreement being ratified by the college’s teachers union. The teachers are expected to vote on the plan within the next week.

TRUSTEES accepted the resignations of AnDrea Hendrix, dean of the Iola campus, Sacha Santimano, assistant womens basketball coach, and music instructors Michelle and Bryan Summers. Replacement searches for each already have begun.
Vince DeGrado, former track and cross country coach for ACCC, has been rehired for both capacities. DeGrado left ACCC to take a similar coaching job at Cowley County Community College. Brett Lisher, a former ACCC baseball player, has been hired as an assistant baseball coach. Amelia Grace Allen was hired as assistant cheer and dance coach.

ACCC’S construction and maintenance technology program has been suspended for the upcoming school year. The program was put in a state of flux due to the closing of Kan-Build, an Osage City-based manufacturer of mobile homes.
The struggling economy forced Kan-Build to shut its doors this spring, leaving the ACCC program without facilities.
College President John Masterson stressed that the program isn’t being dissolved and could resume if a home for the program could be found at either the Iola or Burlingame campus.

THE COLLEGE will continue to self-insure its intercollegiate athletic programs for the 10th year in a row.
The policy includes a self-funded base plan on claims up to $25,000, administered by Bob McCloskey Insurance of Matawan, N.J., with a $38,900 stop loss policy in place to cover catastrophic injuries. Gary McIntosh of MDR Insurance is the local contact for the policy.
The college’s premium of $18,835 is down slightly from last year, noted Steve Troxel, ACCC’s vice president for finance and operations, because of a drop from $8,925 to $7,500 for catastrophic coverage.
Couple the premium with the stop loss policy, and ACCC’s total exposure for 2011-12 is $57,735.
A fully insured plan would cost $59,447, according to figures provided by McCloskey.

THE TRUSTEES accepted a bid of $12,499.95 from Contract Supply of Prairie Village to purchase replacement furniture for the college dormitories. Twelve beds, mattresses, chests of drawers and desks, as well as a love seat, sofa and four side chairs are being replaced. Contract Supply’s bid was the lowest of three.
The college also will purchase 21 computers for its computer lab and 25 replacement office computers from Global Gov-Ed. The computer lab machines will be purchased for $13,347.11, the lowest of four bids received.
The office computers will cost $18,627.75, the lowest of three bids.
Trustees also accepted a bid from Advantage Computers to replace two laptop computers at a price of $1,360, the lowest of three bids.
