Anthony Myers, 22, is recovering at home following a seizure he suffered after being involved Wednesday in a single-car accident near Elsmore.
Dena Myers, Anthony’s grandmother, told the Register over the weekend he was dismissed from a Joplin hospital after a battery of tests gave him an otherwise clean bill of health.
Myers apparently fell asleep Wednesday morning after working the night shift at Gates Corporation. He was driving home to Elsmore when his pickup left the roadway, entered the ditch and struck a culvert, flipping onto its roof in a drainage ditch.
Myers was trapped in the pickup for more than an hour, in knee-deep water, before he found his phone and called 911. It then took authorities about 15 minutes to find his truck, which was virtually invisible to passing traffic because of the steep ditch.
He was initially treated at Allen County Regional Hospital.
He suffered the seizure that evening, and was flown via helicopter from Elsmore to Joplin.
Dena Myers said doctors revealed her grandson has a genetic predisposition to seizures, and Wednesday’s episode may have been triggered by a mild concussion he suffered in the accident.
Doctors believe the concussion was caused from the pickup’s airbag, Dena Myers said.
Since being dismissed from the hospital, Myers has followed through with his plans to move from Elsmore to Manhattan, to live nearer his girlfriend, Dena Myers said.
Because of the seizure, Myers must surrender his license for at least six months, his grandmother said.
“He’s hoping to find a job where he can take advantage of Manhattan’s bus system,” she said.
He is taking medication for the seizures. If no further episodes occur over the next six months, his driving privileges may be reinstated, she said.
