A suspicious house fire in south Iola Friday is being investigated as arson.

The Allen County Sheriff’s Department said a suspect was identified, but no arrests have been made, following the fire at 525 S. Kentucky St.

The fire was reported about 6:45 p.m., where Iola firefighters found the single-story home fully engulfed in smoke and flames.

The crews were able to get the fire under control fairly quickly, but remained on scene for several hours to ensure all hot spots were extinguished, Iola Fire Chief Corey Isbell reported. There were no injuries.

The nature of the fire led officials to summon the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s office, which confirmed the blaze was likely due to arson.

The house, which lies just outside Iola city limits, was unoccupied, Sheriff Anthony Maness said.

The Sheriff’s Department and Iola Police Department are assisting with the ongoing investigation.

The suspect’s name has not been released.
