Garrett Cleaver, 26, remained at large today.
Cleaver led Humboldt and Allen County officers on an eight-mile car chase Monday afternoon after an incident in Humboldt, during which he fled from a vehicle with an assault rifle following a traffic stop. Minutes later, after he allegedly threatened a Humboldt officer, Cleaver returned to the car and sped out of town.
The car crashed near Iowa Road and 2000 Street about five miles northeast of Humboldt. Cleaver then ran into a wooded area, still in possession of the rifle. He has not been seen since.
“We’ve contacted some of his associates and places he’s been known to frequent,” Sheriff Tom Williams said this morning.
Williams encouraged anyone with any information helpful in locating Cleaver to call his office, 365-1400, 911 or Allen County Crime Stoppers, 1-800-222-8477.
Williams said that during a search of the car Cleaver was in, originally driven by Melissa Elder, 31, Humboldt, methamphetamine was found. Elder was arrested for obstruction after she gave officers information that proved false. Williams said drug charges, prompted by the methamphetamine, likely would be filed against Elder and Cleaver.
Cleaver faces a host of other charges, possibly including one or more for federal gun violations.
“The attorney general’s office also is prosecuting a case of vehicular homicide against him in Neosho County,” Williams said.
