MORAN — Captain “Magic” Valentino Willis is bringing his anti-drug and anti-violence message to students in Iola, Moran and Humboldt.
“I’m teaching kids to respect their culture, teachers, counselors and be involved in education,” Willis said. “I’m trying to help kids all around the country.”
Willis was at Marmaton Valley on Monday. ACMAT, Allen County Multi-Agency Team, is partnering with Willis in the effort to combat drugs. ACMAT Chairwoman, Angela Murphy, said Willis is an effective messenger.
“When I saw Willis’s message and intent, it was a perfect marriage with ACMAT’s goals,” Murphy said. “These kids are our future and we need to make sure they’re educated.”
Willis was formerly with Harlem Comedy Basketball. He was also drafted by the New Jersey Nets where he averaged 25 points per game.
Willis delivered a humorous, but important message to the students on drugs and violence. From children as young as elementary to as old as the high school level, Willis had the students repeat yes and no questions
“Are we do gonna do drugs?” Willis asked.
“Nooo!” yelled the students.
“Are we gonna drink alcohol?” he followed.
“Nooo!” they again screamed.
Willis then exhibited his prowess on the court, throwing some fancy passes and showing off a few tricks.
Getting back to business, Willis recalled the story of the late Len Bias, who in 1986 was drafted in the first round by the Boston Celtics. Two days later, Bias died of a drug overdose.
As he presented his message, Willis had the students repeat the line “knowledge is power” which stood out in the minds of the students.
Willis said he wants to make an impact on students around the nation as he continues his tour. The next generation of children can set the tone for the long haul, he said.
“I’m trying to save kids in this country as they are the future of the world,” Willis said. “They could be our future doctors, lawyers and even teachers.”
Willis was also at Humboldt schools on Monday. Today, he addresses Jefferson and McKinley elementary schools in Iola. Wednesday, he will appear at Lincoln Elementary.
