Replacing a bridge over Indian Creek just west of Geneva will cost about $740,000, Bill King told Allen County commissioners Tuesday.

“That’s the engineer’s estimate,” said King, director of Public Works, of the project that isn’t expected to be done for two or three years.

Discussions about the Geneva bridge and one west of Humboldt over Owl Creek, referred to as the Hegwald bridge because of a nearby neighbor, have cropped up several times, but construction of either awaits Kansas Department of Transportation funding.

King wants to prepare now for the Geneva bridge, which has been in the hopper for years.

Commissioners approved an engineering contract for cost plus $7,200, not to exceed $65,000. Also, King said geology work would cost about $7,000 and the county would be responsible for acquiring right of way.

The county’s 2013 budget contains about $420,000 in the special bridge fund.

“The state (KDOT) will get involved financially when construction starts,” King said.

JOE HURLA, 360 Energy Engineers, Lawrence, said tracked energy savings, from courthouse improvement projects done with American Recovery and Reinvestment (federal stimulus) funding, was $11,700 for the past year.

That exceeds guaranteed savings of just under $8,000, he noted.

Hurla pointed out that since savings had exceeded guarantees, 360 had satisfied measurement and verification requirements of its engineered savings contract.

A new roof and climate control equipment were parts of the project.

Further, Hurla said for the county to get the most from improvements, it should continue to monitor and track savings, which his company could do with a new contract.

Commissioners took no action.
