LAHARPE — Visitors to LaHarpe have another option for outdoor activities in the cold, wintry weather.
A small ice skating surface, installed in the softball diamond at LaHarpe City Park, has seen sporadic use since it opened last week.
The rink, roughly 50 feet by 30 feet, is filled with about four inches of water that has since frozen to create a smooth skating surface.
The rink was installed by members of the LaHarpe PRIDE Committee, eager to give folks an outdoor recreation opportunity in the dead of winter.
The project was made possible with assistance from Ken Anderson Plumbing LLC, which provided the polyvinyl chloride pipe that comprises the rink’s perimeter; Diebolt Lumber, which provided the water-proof liner; and members of the LaHarpe Volunteer Fire Department, who supplied the water.
Use of the rink, obviously, is highly dependant on the weather. The rink is closed when temperatures exceed 32 degrees.
