In 1964, Chevrolet introduced a sporty mid-size car, the Chevelle, which immediately drew a following.

Older Chevelles continue to tantalize, so much so that worshippers have formed clubs. So when one of the older General Motors products happens by, particularly if it has a SuperSport emblem attached, heads turn.

A good number of Chevelles will be in Iola this weekend when Dan McKarnin hosts the fifth annual Chevelle Cruise-In Picnic at Riverside Park.

“Last year we had about 25 Chevelles and I imagine we’ll have that many this weekend,” McKarnin said.

Members of Chevelle clubs in Wichita and Kansas City will bring their spiffed up rides and several area owners are expected to make an appearance, Mc-Karnin said.

“If someone else has an older, classic car they’d like to show off, they’re welcome, too,” he added.

Some Chevelles will be in town Friday night; most will arrive Saturday morning, “anywhere from 9 o’clock until noon,” McKarnin predicted.

Friday evening will feature a photo session on the southwest corner of the Gas School lawn.

“From there the Gas water tower will be in the background,” he said, with the Gas, Kan. lettering a nice backdrop.

Saturday, owners will have their cars arranged in Riverside Park for admirers to see. They also will take in an automotive delight by touring Don Nichols’ classic car warehouse in the old Merchants Supply building, 224 N. Washington Ave.

The cruise-in isn’t a formal event, just friends getting together to talk about their favorite cars, McKarnin said.

“Owners are happy to share information about their cars,” he said, part of the joy of owning a classic car.
