The Bowlus Fine Arts Center will host “A Kansan You Should Know,” Duane West, at 7 p.m. Friday in the Creitz Recital Hall.
West is well known for being the prosecuting attorney in the Clutter family murders. The famous murder case in Holcomb became the basis for the book “In Cold Blood,” by Truman Capote.
Bowlus executive director, Susan Raines said West will briefly speak about the Clutter case and his entrepreneurial ventures.
“He is a big supporter of the arts,” Raines said.
West manages the career of artist Jesse Montes. Montes’ work will be displayed in the Mary L. Martin Art Gallery on Friday. A reception for the artist will be at 6 p.m. and West’s series will follow in the recital hall. Montes’ work is created on cardboard.
West has worn many hats in his career. He was the former mayor of Garden City, has served on the city council for 12 years and is a playwright. He also has a patent for Slice Cream, which is a single serving of ice cream cut like pieces of pie.
Raines said during the 6 p.m. reception there will be refreshments. The speaker series is free to the public. Enter through the east or south doors of the Bowlus, Raines said.
