Property taxes will bring in 3 percent less to Allen County coffers compared to a year ago. Its assessed valuation was about $2.75 million less than last year’s approximate $91 million. Most of the loss occurred in personal property, including oil and gas, which dropped $4.1 million and was offset by gains in real estate values and utilities assessments.
Sales tax revenue, however, for the first four months of 2010 fared slightly better compared to last year’s.
Allen County assesses 1 percent, with half going to solid waste and its share of the remainder — cities in the county receive a portion based on population — being deposited in the general fund.
In the first four months of 2010, the county has realized sales tax revenue of $409,255.94, compared to $401,861.63 a year ago.
In 2009, $1,236.077.21 in sales tax was raised for county use.
Commissioners made no comment on how they will deal with the loss in property tax revenue, rather than their stock answer to recent budget requests from various agencies that “it’s going to be tight this year and we’ll do what we can.”
