Allen County will give a hand to construction of USD 258’s new sports complex at the east edge of Humboldt.
K.B. Criss told commissioners Tuesday morning the complex should be ready for student use by late next summer.
“We have the first phase ready for bidding,” said Criss, district superintendent, which will include water and sanitary sewer installation, site preparation to subgrade and road and parking lot preliminaries.
Baseball, softball and football fields, as well as a running track, will occupy more than half of nearly 52 aces donated to the district by Joe and Jane Works. The remainder will be set aside with the thought that new elementary, middle and high schools may be built in 15 or so years, Criss said.
Financing will come from money put away over the last 10 years in the district’s capital outlay fund and lease-purchase arrangements with a local bank, he added.
County Counselor Alan Weber said the only requirements of the county’s was for the district to complete a building application and for it “to comply with county zoning requirements, which aren’t too great.”
Criss said he was eager to meet those requirements and asked if the county would help with construction of an access street from Georgia Road, an extension of Humboldt’s Central Street, and parking lots.
The district is thinking chip-and-seal, Criss said.
Commissioners encouraged Criss to clear the timing for the work with Bill King, director of Public Works, and said the district would be treated the same as smaller cities in the county. Cities purchase oil and the county provides rock, equipment and labor.
