The Iola Elks Lodge is joining a nationwide campaign to raise funds for the Pearl Harbor National Memorial.

Elks members will host breakfast the second Saturday of May, beginning Feb. 8.

Biscuits and gravy, hash browns, coffee and milk will be served from 7 to 10 a.m. at the Elks Lodge, 202 S. Jefferson Ave.

Future meal dates are March 14, April 11 and May 9.

Meals will sell for $5 apiece, explained Elks member Tom Nevans.

All proceeds will be forwarded to the Pacific Historical Parks, a World War II-focused, tax-exempt benefit organization that oversees the Pearl Harbor National Memorial.

The idea for the project came after Mike Luhr, the outgoing Grand Exalted Ruler for the Elks, and his wife visited the Pearl Harbor site.

They noted many of the displays and signs at the memorial had begun to show signs of wear and tear.

Many were weather-beaten and outdated, Luhr reported.

The Elks organization announced last summer a campaign to raise more than $783,000 for necessary repairs.

As of Dec. 31, roughly $243,000 has been raised.
