Filing deadline nears for cities, school boards

Folks running for city or school board seats have until noon June 1 to file. Among those who have filed for re-election is Iola Mayor Steve French.

Iola Mayor Steve French is seeking another term in office.

French is among those who have filed for various city and school board seats in Allen County.

The deadline to file is fast approaching. Applicants have until noon June 1 to do so.

Elsewhere in Iola, Darcus Kottwitz has filed for a Council seat to represent Iola’s Fourth Ward, which encompasses the southeast quadrant of town. The seat is currently held by Joelle Shallah, who has not announced yet whether she is running for re-election.

Two Iola Council members, Nickolas Kinder and Carl Slaugh, have already announced they will not seek re-election. Kinder represents Iola’s First Ward, which covers the northwest part of town, or those living north of Breckenridge and west of Cottonwood streets. Slaugh lives in Ward 2, the northeast part of town, or east of Cottonwood and north of Carpenter, Douglas and East streets.

Councilwoman Kim Peterson (Ward 3) has not announced whether she will seek to continue to represent the southwest quadrant of Iola.

Meanwhile, Iola-USD 257 Board of Education members Doug Dunlap, Jen Taylor and Daniel Willis have filed to keep their seats.

Gena Clounch and Vicki Curry have filed to retain their seats with the Allen Community College Board of Trustees.

ELSEWHERE, Humboldt Mayor Nobby Davis has filed for re-election, as did Humboldt City council members Otis Crawford and Sunny Shreeve. Kevin Heisler and Cindy Jaro have filed for Humboldt-USD 258 school board seats.

In Moran, Jim Mueller and Joe Stotler have filed for City Council, while Kenneth McVey, Kent LaRue and Kris Smith have filed for seats on the Marmaton Valley-USD 256 Board of Education.

George Grisier and Harry Holloway have filed for re-election to the Gas City Council.

Darrell Monfort has filed for a seat on the Southwind Extension District Board of Directors.
