Hirschsprung’s disease is a genetic disease in which a person is born without necessary nerve cells or muscles in part of the infant’s colon.
A newborn with Hirschsprung’s is typically unable to have a bowel movement in the first few days after birth. In some cases, the condition may not be detected until later in childhood.
Hirschsprung’s is treated with surgery to bypass or remove the diseased part of the colon.
