Humboldt’s activity sparks optimism

HUMBOLDT — What’s good for the gander, a quicker route for travelers between Kansas City and Tulsa, almost cooked Humboldt’s goose.

It was in the early 1980s when Kansas leaders looking to reroute U.S. 169, decided to bypass the main streets of pretty much every community along the way.

Places such as Iola, Chanute, Paola and Osawatomie were lucky, with the new highway within a block or two of at least passing through each town’s city limits.
