HUMBOLDT — Humboldt Mayor Bob Sharp, completing his fourth year in office, announced Monday that he will not seek re-election.
Sharp, 87, isn’t exactly retiring, however.
“I’ve been busy keeping cattle at my farm and for two neighbors,” he said at the start of Monday’s Humboldt City Council meeting. “I’m at cattle sales three days or more a week.”
That schedule has made it difficult to tend to his duties for the city on a regular basis, Sharp said.
“I have one daughter in Nebraska and one in Texas, and both have asked me to spend more time with my family,” he said.
“There are lots of good people in town who could run,” Sharp said. “I’d like to see several people file.”
One candidate, Nobby Davis, has filed to fill Sharp’s seat.
Four council members’ seats are up for re-election: Vada Aikins and Jerry Griffeth from Ward 2, and Sean McReynolds and Wayne Carson from Ward 1. Aikins has filed for re-election.
The filing deadline is noon Jan. 25.
