HUMBOLDT — School board members have approved placing a “school bus stop ahead” sign along a rural county road.
The USD 258 Board of education voted, 5-0, to send the sign to Allen County commissioners so it can be placed along a hill near 269 Delaware Rd.
Drivers often travel too fast down a hill, making it potentially dangerous for students loading onto the bus.
Board members also approved a 3.1 percent salary increase for certified staff. An extra $29 will be added to insurance.
Superintendent of Schools Kay Lewis discussed school fundraising and where money might go. The district will holds its first fundraiser of the 2017-2018 academic year Oct. 15 at Humboldt High School’s cafeteria for a breakfast.
“We’ve wanted to provide more scholarships for kids,” Lewis said. “We’ve heard from parents that they get so much money at the beginning, but they don’t get it towards their junior or senior year.”
These funds could also be used for student leadership development opportunities such as going to a conference or event. Using money for summer camp also was discussed.
Board members heard a proposal for a weeklong trip to Washington, D.C., for eighth-grade students through the company World Stride. This trip would cost about $2,000 and include transportation, hotel and meal expenses.
There is no minimum or maximum amount of students required to go, but it would not be a school-sponsored activity. If this trip were to take place, it would happen during the last week of May after the school year concludes.
The five-day, four-night excursion includes visits to the Holocaust museum, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial and a possible Washington Nationals baseball game.
IN AN exercise, Humboldt Middle School teacher Darcie Croisant teamed students with board members to create sculptures out of Play Doh as a team-building exercise.
“We talked about how we can work together individually, but we can also work together,” Croisant said. “We might sometimes have a weakness, but with others we can grow stronger. For team building, it’s important for us to be able to know and understand each other’s differences and acceptance them and be able to help us work better to create awesome and amazing things.”
