The family is all together for the holidays, but sometimes space can be a little tight. Maybe a run or walk is exactly what you need, or at least Damaris Kunkler believes so.
Kunkler, program director for Thrive Allen County, has been working to organize Iola’s 16th Annual Jingle Bell Jog, scheduled for 1 p.m., Dec. 21.
“The beauty of this run/walk is we know what we are getting into,” she said.
Friends and family from out of town generally use the JBG as a fun family activity. Bells are provided to attach to one’s shoes. Frequently participants use the 5K run or 3K walk as an opportunity to dress in festive costumes.
Kunkler said the event has been a great way to showcase what Iola has to offer. This year, more than ever, the runners will be paying attention.
“We’ve changed up the route a little bit to utilize our trails,” Kunkler said.
Runners will head west on West Street, to where it intersects the Prairie Spirit Trail. Walkers will head north on the Prairie Spirit Trail, while the runners will head south on the Southwind Trail. Kunkler said there will be a Christmas tree on both routes, marking the turnaround point.
Kunkler admitted the weather opens up some unique challenges for participants, but also said that can be part of the fun also.
“It’s going to be cold,” she said. Snow is forecast.
To take the chill off, hot cocoa and gingerbread cookies will be provided following the race.
The cost for the event is lower than recent years, $15 across the board for any participant. She said the lower cost is an effort “to get more people out.”
To sign up for the Jingle Bell Jog, go to the Thrive office at 12 W. Jackson or register online at www.jinglebelljogks2013@eventbrite.com. For more information, contact the Thrive office at 620-365-8128.
There is no deadline for registration, but the earlier the better to guarantee a dry-fit T-shirt, Kunkler said. Anyone is encouraged to sign up, including friends and family from out of town — especially “if mom kicks them out of the house.”
