Four junked vehicles were powerful teaching tools this week for local firefighters.
A two-day training session on vehicle extrication wrapped up Friday at Iola Fire Department.
Instructors Rick Diebert and Josh Rogers, working with the University of Kansas Fire and Rescue Training Institute, showed the firefighters the proper technique on various apparatuses, such as saws, chisels and the Jaws of Life.
The training session is funded annually through a portion of homeowners insurance premiums, Rogers said, allowing emergency personnel to complete the training free of charge.
Firefighters from Fort Scott, Garnett and Neodesha also took part.
At least three sessions on other aspects of fire protection are scheduled through the KU training program at IFD this year.
