LE ROY — When the Le Roy PRIDE Committee was asked to help restock the elementary school’s pantry with school supplies, community members eagerly dug into their pockets to buy the needed supplies.
“It was amazing,” said Teresa True, PRIDE Committee member. “We posted the school’s need for pencils, glue sticks and other school supplies on PRIDE’s Facebook and the community began bringing us the items. Everyone wanted to donate.”
Le Roy PRIDE is a community organization whose projects and goals are those that benefit the community as a whole, or at least a large portion. It does not give aid to individuals, said Nancy Storrer, another committee member.
PRIDE projects throughout the year include planting flowers in the city park, sponsoring a bridal show, Easter egg hunt, Christmas tree walk, Love Lights A Tree and bringing Santa Claus to the city, which are co-sponsored by the city and Le Roy Branch Library.
The group’s next project will be a “Trunk or Treat” event at Halloween.
“The children enjoy the Halloween event at the city park. People decorate their trunks and hand out candy in a safe environment for the children. The best decorated trunk will receive a small prize,” True said.
The PRIDE Committee’s major fundraiser each year is a barbecue stand at the high school’s homecoming football game.
Anyone is welcome to join the Le Roy PRIDE Committee, which meets the third Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at the fire station.
“We have one lady who drives to our meetings each month from Garnett. She grew up in Le Roy and told us, ‘Le Roy is where my heart is,’ and she wanted to continue helping Le Roy grow and improve through the PRIDE Committee,” True said.
