Kids growing up go through different phases as to what they want to do as a career. Most want to be something extravagant like become a singer, actor or an astronaut. Kendra Britt was not that kid.

Britt, second-grade teacher at McKinley Elementary, always knew she would become a teacher — in fact, it runs in the family.

“My aunt was a teacher,” Britt said. “She was the one who inspired me to become a teacher.”

When Britt was in high school she participated in a mentoring program where she went into her aunt’s, Daryl Sigg, classroom and helped her teach.

But that is not where it began.

“When I was younger I would ask for extra worksheets from the teacher and take them home.” Britt said. “I would practice with them, give them to my sisters and make them do them, then I would grade them.”

Britt grew up in Iola and went to Pittsburg State University for her Bachelor’s degree.

Similar to her knowing she would always be a teacher, she always knew she would come back and teach in Iola.

“My whole family is here,” she said. “I am not ready to leave.”

Britt moved back to Iola over the summer and has rekindled the friendships she had with the people she went to high school and even grade school with.

Unlike most her age, she doesn’t spend much time in front of the TV or even watching movies.

“I read a lot. Over the summer I read 13 books,” Britt said.

She also spends a lot of time with her pets, a cat and a dog, who have a dynamic relationship.

“They are best friends,” Britt said. “When the cat was younger my dog would bathe him.”

WHILE attending Pittsburg she learned to work with current technology used in classrooms.
