In an effort to increase its outreach, the Iola Public library has eliminated overdue fines for all books, movies and audiobooks, according to Sharon Moreland, library director.
“Overdue fines can keep a family away from the library and that’s the last thing we want,” Moreland said.
A similar move was decided by library board members in 2020 for children’s accounts.
Libraries across the nation are going fine-free, while maintaining charges for lost, damaged or stolen materials.
The library’s Summer Learning Program begins Monday, June. 6. The June and July calendars include storytimes, crafts and a water and foam party. A highlight will be a family concert with singer-songwriter Alan Cunninham at 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 14.
Library Littles storytimes prepare toddlers and preschoolers for reading through books, songs, rhymes and fingerplays. For the first three weeks of each month, Children’s librarian Lesa Cole will host a storytime at 10:30 Wednesday mornings in the library meeting room with a repeat on Thursdays at 2 p.m.
At 2 p.m. on June 16 and July 12, families are invited to our Library Littles playdate with a room full of developmentally appropriate toys and the chance to speak informally with a guest professional.
Movie Nights are at 6 p.m. June 23 and July 28.
Adults, don’t despair, the library has summer reading activities for you, too.
A book talk group meets at 2 p.m. the first Wednesday of each month. And our partnership with Thrive Allen County and Televeda continues throughout the summer with a whole catalog of online writing, art, exercise and cooking classes. See the offering at https:/www.televeda.com/events.
