A little rock-hard turf did little to douse the enthusiasm Wednesday as members of the Community Involvement Task Force broke ground for a new splash park in Iola.

There’s bigger machinery on the way to handle that part.

The group gathered at Meadowbrook Park, site of the new splash park, to mark the start of construction.

Crews are expected to be on hand as early as this weekend to begin dirt work, noted Renee Shaughnessy, CITF member.

Iola Assistant City Administrator Corey Schinstock said water crews also are poised to begin extending water service to the site soon.

If all goes well, the splash park should be open to the public sometime next spring.
