COLONY — Stay Grounded Co., Colony’s coffee shop and community hub, celebrated its relocation Saturday morning with a “new grounds” opening.

They didn’t move far — in fact, just next door to 210 E. Broad St., the former home of Speak Cookies, which closed in February.

The new location, considerably larger than their previous site, will allow the business to expand its offerings, noted owner Kristen Boone.

“Grab & go” lunch items, ice cream, and a robust retail section featuring Christian books, clothing, merchandise and more are all part of the new store.

For Mary Scovill, a lifelong Colony resident, it’s just what Colony needed.

“We couldn’t ask for anything better,” said Scovill. “We need a Christian coffee shop like this. We need God everywhere. We don’t have a lot in Colony, but one thing we always have is community support.”

That support was abundantly clear Saturday as throngs of customers came in for coffee, baked goods and a chance to check out the new digs.

Blake Boone, Kristen’s husband, noted Saturday’s event wouldn’t have been possible without friends and neighbors, with locals lending a hand every night the past two weeks.

“This was a God thing,” said Kristen, who said she wasn’t looking to expand her business when Speak Cookies closed. “I felt like this was a call, and I trusted.”

The shop is open Tuesday through Thursday from 7 a.m to 1 p.m. and on Fridays until 5 p.m. Boone has a team of 6-8 employees. It was all hands on deck Saturday.

“We started busy with our early morning farmers,” said employee Tammy Bowen. “And it’s just taken off since then.”

Life’s timing is a curious thing. A day before Easter Sunday, Colony’s coffee shop, with roots firm in the Christian faith, started a new chapter. A brief lull occurred around 11 o’clock as some headed for the exit as others were just arriving.
