Iola firefighters remained on the scene into Thursday afternoon after a fire was reported in an upstairs apartment at 302 East St.
The apartment is part of one of Iola’s oldest homes, dating back to when it was built by the Northrup family in the late 19th century.
Battling the blaze was complicated because the fire had spread to the attic within the home, as they sprayed water and foam repeatedly into the structure.
All of the occupants had been safely evacuated by the time firefighters arrived.
There was no immediate word on the fire’s cause.
