Those seeking to be considered for the first round of housing improvement funds, funded through a $1.4 million grant from Federal Home Loan Bank of Topeka, must have their applications submitted by Friday.
Patrick Zirjacks, community engagement coordinator for Thrive Allen County, which is helping administer the funds, said the next round of applications would be accepted starting in early 2027.
More than 50 Allen Countians have submitted applications so far.
The grants differ from typical USDA housing grants in that low and moderate-income residents are eligible. A household from one to four people can qualify with a household income of up to $67,300. A family fo five to eight people can still qualify if their income is less than $88,850.
The plan is to put at least $3,500 into every project, with the average investment at about $23,000 perhome.
Improvements include exterior protection (roof, siding, etc.), energy efficiency (windows, appliances), and health and mobility issues.
