Iola City Council members will discuss year-end budget amendments Monday to balance out the city’s financial books.

The routine matter is necessary because of the difficulty municipalities face each year when they must budget up to 18 months in advance.

In this case, the city must amend its employee benefit and recreation funds, due to increased health insurance costs, and due to some unexpected repairs for recreation equipment; and the tourism and convention fund because of added revenue received from the motel tax.

Council members also are expected to rezone about 11 acres of property the city acquired this year north of Super 8 Motel along U.S. 169.

The land is currently zoned as residential, but the city wants to rezone it for potential business development.

The rezoning has been unanimously endorsed by the Iola Planning Commission.

Of note, Monday’s meeting is one of only two remaining Council meetings in 2025.

The city canceled its second November meeting because of its proximity to Thanksgiving, and there’s only one meeting scheduled in December, on Dec. 8. After that, the next meeting is Jan. 12.
