HUMBOLDT — A man died Sunday after he jumped into the Neosho River Saturday morning to rescue a child who had fallen into the water.

Humboldt Police Chief Shannon Moore confirmed the incident occurred, but has not yet released the name of the victim.

The child apparently slipped on the rocks and fell into the water, and the man immediately jumped after him in a rescue attempt, and both began struggling in the water.

Eyewitnesses saw the incident, and called 911. Emergency personnel were able to get both out of the water, and attempted to revive the older man. Both the child and man were taken to metropolitan hospitals.

The man succumbed to his injuries Sunday, Moore said. The child has subsequently been released from the hospital and is home.
