MORAN — The Marmaton Market, which closed its doors in September, will reopen for one day Saturday, in order to sell off the grocery store’s remaining merchandise at half-price.
Lori Holman, a Marmaton Market board member, described the sale as a “complete liquidation” of food, health items and household goods.
The sale will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Proceeds will help the market “get some bills paid,” Holman said. “We still owe back wages for employees, utilities and other things.”
Mounting debt and weak sales forced the store’s closure on Sept. 3.
At a public meeting afterward, board members revealed the store owes about $26,000 in unpaid bills, plus $3,200 in payroll, on top of a $242,000 Small Business Administration loan. Utility bills due to the city total more than $4,200.
Holman said that shelving, coolers and equipment will not be sold Saturday.
“We’re still working through a lot of details,” she said.
Customers are asked to bring cash. Credit cards will not be accepted, “and there have been some concerns about accepting checks,” Holman said. “It’s cash and carry.”
