MORAN — Nancy Houk, Warren Johnson and Kris Smith all have filed to keep their seats on the Moran City Council.
The incumbents are the only ones to file so far, in advance of the June 1 deadline.
The Moran Council is one of two potentially contested local races to be decided in the upcoming election season.
County Commissioner Jerry Daniels’ seat also is up for re-election. Daniels represents Allen County’s first commission district, which encompasses the southern half of Allen County, as well as the Moran area to the north.
Of note, the Moran council seat is considered a non-partisan race, meaning candidates do not need to file with a party designation.
Those running for a county commission seat — like the governor’s and U.S. Senate races, and numerous township precinct committee seats, must include a party designation.
The partisan seats will be on the ballot in the Aug. 4 primary elections.
The only way the Moran Council race would qualify for the August primary vote would be if at least 10 candidates file, noted Allen County Clerk Shannon Patterson.
Otherwise the Moran Council vote, along with those advancing out of the primary, will be decided in the November general election.
Candidates for the Moran Council, County Commission or precinct committee seats must file by noon June 1 in the County Clerk’s office.
Candidates for the U.S. Senate, U.S. House or state legislative seats must file at the Secretary of State’s office in Topeka by noon on June 1.
