CHANUTE — Neosho County Attorney Tiana McElroy resigned abruptly from her post last week, the Chanute Tribune reported.
The resignation announcement came after confronting county commissioners on a number of issues, including her salary. McElroy was elected to her post in November 2024 and took office last January.
“I cannot work with a board I cannot trust,” McElroy said, according to the Tribune. “I feel bad for the citizens because I really do care, but I just can’t work with this board any more.”
The resignation came after McElroy asked commissioners about pay raises to all of the other Neosho County Department heads except for her, the newspaper reported.
Commissioner Nicholas Galemore told McElroy he’d fielded complaints from constituents about not being able to reach McElroy on multiple occasions.
McElroy also works as a deputy county attorney in Allen County, the Tribune reported, in part to supplement her income. “I am an attorney with 22 years of experience and I have bills to pay,” she said.
The newspaper reported McElroy’s salary was hiked from $72,000 to $92,000 last spring, still below what she was seeking.
“You said you were good with that,” Galemore told McElroy.
McElroy told commissioners the county pays four attorneys collectively about $240,000 annually for other cases, and argued she should be making at least half that amount individually, the newspaper reported.
Another dispute arose between McElroy and commissioners on renovations to the flooring in her office, which was to come diversion funds paid to the county through the court system.
However, McElroy said those funds are unavailable because of an ongoing audit of the fund.
The county attorney’s office did not provide an effective date for McElroy’s resignation, the newspaper said.
