The sound of gunfire somewhere at the far edge of South Washington Avenue prompted a call to police Sunday afternoon.
The Allen County Sheriff’s Department said witnesses reported hearing between 15 to 20 shots, possibly near the Elm Creek Bridge, and saw a red vehicle with several young people quickly fleeing the area to the south.
Iola police officers and deputies converged on the area, but did not find the vehicle, nor could they find such evidence as shell casings.
Guns are illegal to fire inside Iola’s city limits.
