A suspect is listed in stable condition after being shot by pursuing deputies during a chaotic truck chase in rural Bourbon County.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation reported details about the late Thursday shooting, which stemmed from a report of a stolen truck leaving Pittsburg.

The truck was spotted heading north, and Crawford County sheriff’s deputies pursued. The driver refused to stop and began driving northbound into southbound traffic along U.S. 69, according to the KBI news release. Attempts by deputies to disable the vehicle were unsuccessful.

As the pursuit entered Bourbon County, two Crawford County deputies discharged their firearms, striking both the suspect and the vehicle, KBI reported.

The suspect lost control of the vehicle near Indian Road, about two miles south of Fort Scott, and was taken into custody.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, was treated at a local hospital before being transferred to a regional medical center, and was reported in stable condition as of Friday morning.

None of the deputies were injured.

In police use-of-force cases, KBI investigators are called to look into the case.
