Beth Ann Turner, a fixture at City Hall as Iola’s administrative secretary for more than 43 years, will retire at the end of the year.
The retirement was announced at Tuesday’s Iola City Commission meeting.
“It has been an honor and a privilege to work with the employees of this municipality and all associated entities through the years,” Turner wrote to the commissioners. “I have enjoyed my 431⁄2 years with the city, but I am truly looking forward to dedicating my time, energy and love to my family.”
Commissioners also accepted the resignation of firefighter and emergency medical technician-intermediate Joshua Savage, who is joining a fire department in Johnson County.
In other personnel matters, commissioners approved the transfer of Jed Rice from his position in the utility office as a meter reader to an apprentice lineman in the electric distribution department.
THE BALLOT language for a Nov. 2 referendum on Iola’s next governing body was approved.
Iolans will be asked to approve a charter ordinance put in place by commissioners setting the size of Iola’s next commission at five members, four commissioners and a mayor. A “no” vote would put in place an eight-member city council.
In either case, the city’s next governing body will be seated next April.
The November vote was prompted by a petition drive in August objecting to the commission’s charter ordinance.
