Feuerborn Family Funeral Service will close its Moran location Dec. 31 and put the building up for sale.

MORAN — Feuerborn Family Funeral Service is closing its Moran location Dec. 31.

The news was shared Monday with Moran City Council members from City Clerk Lori Evans.

The facility, at 344 N. Cedar St., will be put up for sale, Evans said.

Feuerborn has alternate locations in Iola and Garnett.

COUNCIL members agreed to sign off on the warranty for a recent downtown sidewalk replacement project, with a caveat — the state must first certify the concrete work was up to snuff.

The unusual motion came after Council members were notified the city’s endorsement was necessary in order for contractors to be paid for the work.

The work was ordered and overseen by the Kansas Department of Transportation, City Superintendent Mike Stodgell explained.

Aside from periodic visits to the work site, the city was not involved, Stodgell noted.

His concern was nighttime temperatures at one point in the project dipped below freezing, which could have affected the quality of the concrete, with the surface prone to cracking and flaking.

That, in turn, could make the city liable for any repairs, if the Council signed off on the warranty, City Attorney Bret Heim added.

“The state was in charge of it,” Mayor Phillip Merkel said. “We weren’t. But I really don’t want to hold up the contractor because of the state.”

Council members agreed, 4-0, for the conditional endorsement. Councilman Chad Lawson was absent.

COUNCIL members renewed cereal malt beverage licenses for Pump ‘N Pete’s and Marmaton Market, effective Jan. 1. The licenses should be sufficient for both establishments to begin selling slightly stronger variations of alcoholic beverages beginning April 1, when state law allows sales of products consisting of 5 percent alcohol. Currently, such products cannot have more than 3.2 percent alcohol content.

The Council also approved approved a bid from A-Lert Roofing, Erie, to do roof work at City Hall at a price of $1,900.
