Mound City man dies in crash

A head-on collision killed a 29-year-old Mound City man south of Humboldt Tuesday. Four others were injured.

A Mound City man was killed after his car slammed head-on with a pickup south of Humboldt Tuesday.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that Morgan L. Wakefield, 29, was killed after his car, a 2011 Chevy Malibu, crossed the center line while he was northbound on U.S. 169, about six miles south of Humboldt at about 5:42 p.m.

His car collided with a 2018 Dodge Ram pickup, driven by Shawn M. Petterborg, 52, of Stockton.

Wakefield, who was not wearing a seat belt, was declared dead at the scene.

Petterborg was taken to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita for his injuries.

Three passengers in the pickup, Angie J. Hale, 50, Independence, Caitlyn E. Haile, 31, Independence, and a juvenile were taken to Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center for what troopers described as suspected minor injuries.

All of the pickup’s occupants were wearing seat belts, according to KHP.
