Student directors and actors are gearing up for a weekend full of comedy and drama. The student one-act plays begin at 7:30 tonight at the Allen Community College Theatre. They continue through Saturday. The Proposal Who’s on Faust? Superhero Support Group
Each director cast and directed fellow classmates in plays they personally chose. Each play has a unique element to it.
The Proposal, directed by Debra Francis, is about a man, William Ainsworth, in 1800 England who likes a girl, Julia Hightower, but she doesn’t like him. William, played by Colton Schubert, is kind of a sneaky, creepy guy. Even though Julia, played by Jeri Troyer, doesn’t like William she has a secret and he knows what that secret is. William blackmails Julia. This play is an interesting drama with lots of emotion.
Who’s on Faust is directed by Matthew Wynn. Rev. Billy Rae Goodson, played by Jordan Fountain, isn’t as good as one might think. He has business with Beelzie, played by Liesl Wilhoft, who happens to work for the devil. When Goodson promises Beelzie that she can have the next soul who walks through the church doors things get interesting. Young, innocent Jonathan Faust, played by Michael De Los Santos, considers trading his soul for baseball cards — maybe he’s not as innocent as he seems. This cast has great comedic timing and plays out their lines with enthusiasm.
Superhero Support Group, directed by Sarah Price, has the audience laughing from the time the curtain rises. A group of superheros are tired of never being thanked. They help out people as they’re suppose to but feel used. The Doctor, played by Lauren Perez-Engel, has a solution for all of their problems but not every superhero is down with the plan. In this cast each actor falls into character. Catchick and Shade are spin-offs of comic book favorites Catwoman and Batman.
The Sin-Eater
The Sin-Eater is directed by Amanda McDermott. This play has a bit of comedy and a lot of drama. The Sin-Eater, played by Jordan Garcia, has a job other people in his village don’t want, to eat the sins of those who have died. Families place plates of foods on the dead loved one’s chests and the Sin-Eater eats the food. He is shunned from the village and the younger sister, played by Carley Nelson, throws rocks at him. Even though she is mean to him he still loves her and when he finds out that she has died he must find the courage to eat her sins. This play has a very surprising twist. Garcia does a nice job of showing his emotions throughout.
What Love Does to You
What Love Does to You, directed by Nick Thomsen, takes place at a surprise party. It is the largest cast in the line-up; multiple couples have their own problems. As each couple arrives at the party the audience finds out what their problems are and how they all know each other. This one-act easily connects the different story plots. The change of scenes moves quickly and the storyline is riveting.
Tickets are $6 for general admission and $4 for students.
