The Burkes have a knack for helping out people in their community, and having some fun while they’re doing it.
This Saturday Robin and Dave Burke, owners of 5 O’clock Somewhere, will host their second bus-ride fundraiser beginning at noon. The bus will hold 34 people, and drive them to some of the staple watering holes in the area.
The fundraiser is being held to support Trenton Howe, 4, who recently suffered from a stroke. His mother, Michelle Kerby, works at the Russell Stovers Candy factory and lives in Chanute.
“My step-daughter works at Russell Stover, and overheard the mother talking about what had happened to her son,” Robin said. “That’s when she said that she was going to get a hold of Dave (Burke).”
Trenton is currently home from Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, but the family has experienced high medical and travel costs.
That is where the Burkes decided they could help.
“It all went right from there,” Robin said. “It’s neat how everything came together.”
She said Dave has been wanting a bus to give customers safe transportation to local bars in the area, and when he found a used school bus, he jumped at the opportunity and bought it.
Starting from Iola, the bus will run to Reb’s in Humboldt, then Silverado’s in Piqua, then Oasis in Neosho Falls and finally to Burt’s in Yates Center before heading back to Iola. Tickets for a seat on the bus are $10. Space is limited.
For those not wanting to experience the local bar scene, Robin said they are taking monetary donations and donated new items that can be sold to help the family.
“It’s important for people in the community to help each other,” she said, “Especially when it is a child.”
She said the community has already responded to the needs of the family, but they need more help.
“Someone has already donated the fuel for the bus to run on Saturday,” she said.
She said people have already begun to donate, and she hopes to see a full bus on Saturday — it leaves promptly at noon.
“Dave is pretty specific with his times,” she said with a smile. “He will leave at noon.”
